Curing Concrete.

Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after it's placed, but only if it stays moist and protected. Curing is the simplest way to get a stronger, more durable surface.

At a glance:

7 days : Recommended minimum curing

~70% : Of design strength at 7 days

28 days : When design strength is measured

Why Curing Matters.

Concrete hardens through a chemical reaction between cement and water, called hydration. If the surface dries out too early, the reaction stops. The result is a weaker, more porous surface that cracks, dusts and scales. Well-cured concrete is stronger, more wear-resistant and better protected against freeze-thaw damage.

How Long to Cure.

Cure for at least 7 days where possible. In cool weather, strength develops more slowly, so extend curing and protection. Keep traffic off new concrete: foot traffic after about 24 hours, cars after about 7 days, and heavy loads only once design strength is reached.

Curing Methods:

Start curing as soon as finishing is complete. Choose a method that suits the job.

  • Curing compound: Sprayed or rolled on to form a membrane that holds moisture in. Fast and practical for most flatwork.

  • Wet curing: Keep the surface continuously wet with sprinklers or soaked burlap. Very effective, but it must not dry out between wettings.

  • Plastic sheeting: Covers the surface to trap moisture. Lap and weigh the edges. It can cause uneven colour on decorative work.

  • Curing blankets: Hold moisture and heat. Essential in cold weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually after 24 hours in normal conditions. Wait longer in cold weather.

Wait at least 7 days for passenger vehicles, longer for heavy vehicles or in cold weather.

Some products are cure-and-seal. Others must go on after curing. Check the product instructions and ask us if unsure.

Once the concrete has set, yes. Rain on a fresh, unfinished surface can damage it.

The surface can end up significantly weaker, with more cracking, dusting and freeze-thaw damage.
